Maybe you’re waiting (and waiting, and waiting) to finally get a promotion at work. Maybe you think you don’t have enough time, or money, or know-how to start working for yourself. Maybe you’re even stuck because you have no idea what you would do if you were to start working for yourself – start an online business?
Doing what, exactly?
These are the kinds of questions and fears that hold Baby Boomers
back from starting their own business and creating the spectacular life
You can start working for yourself in 2014. Here’s how:Realize there will never be “the right time” to get started.
One of my favourite expressions is “it’s always something.” Meaning that if you don’t have to pay for car repairs this month, the water heater breaks, or your kid needs more money for school.
If it’s not a financial “something,” you’ll suddenly have to work overtime or have a sick parent to care for.
It’s always something, which means that now is as good a time as any to start working for yourself.
Start with a small investment
You don’t need to quit your job to start working for yourself, and you don’t need to invest a ton of money all at once.
You can start quietly, slowly, in your spare time. You can even start by spending 10 or 15 minutes per day working on a blog post, listening to a podcast, or speaking with your business coach on the phone.
Taking baby steps now will pay off big by the end of the year, when you’ll be able to spend more and more time on your business and less and less time working for someone else.
Become accountable
If you are the only person who knows about your dream to work for yourself, it’s all too easy to let that dream slip away when “real life” takes over.
Join Facebook groups of like-minded entrepreneurs, listen to interviews of people doing what you want to do, and find a coach, partner, or mentor to whom you’ll be accountable.
Set goals from now through the end of the year, and make sure someone else knows about those goals and can support you in achieving them.
Keep in mind that those closest to you won’t necessarily make the best accountability buddies, especially if you quitting your day job might impact them in some way.
It’s much better to partner up with a fellow aspiring entrepreneur, or better yet, hire a coach who can help you start working for yourself faster than you ever thought possible.
What’s holding you back from working for yourself?
What’s one thing you can do today to move toward your goal?
